Overview
## What this service is, and who it's for.
Straight explanation, no jargon padding, so you can decide whether it's the right call before you even ring us.

What it isAn emergency electrical call-out is a rapid-response visit to make a dangerous or disruptive electrical situation safe, then either fix it or isolate it pending scheduled remediation. That covers loss of power (whole property or single circuits), tripped RCDs that won't reset, sparking or arcing sockets and switches, burning smells from consumer units or accessories, live parts exposed by damage, and any other situation where waiting isn't safe.

Who it's forHomeowners and tenants without power at the wrong time, landlords whose tenant has called at 11pm, commercial premises with a fault mid-trading, industrial sites where downtime is measured in thousands per hour, and anyone who's just seen or smelled something they shouldn't have.

When you need itNow. If you can smell burning, see sparks, or you've lost power to a critical circuit (freezer, medical equipment, security), call 07888 862958 immediately. Standard hours (7am–8pm, Mon–Sun) are charged at the standard rate; outside those hours the out-of-hours rate applies.

Why professional mattersElectrical faults get worse, not better. An arcing socket left overnight is a house fire by morning. A tripped RCD that won't reset means an active fault somewhere on the installation, not a device to keep resetting. Making it safe now is cheaper than the alternative.

What happens if you leave it
## The cost of putting it off is rarely just money.
The reason emergency electrical faults become emergency electrical disasters is delay. Every hour that a burning smell is ignored, that a socket keeps arcing, that an RCD is repeatedly reset, the failure mode gets worse and the eventual fix gets more expensive.

### What can go wrong

- House fires developing from arcing accessories left overnight.
- Freezers thawed and food ruined when a single tripped circuit isn't diagnosed.
- Security systems offline through the night with the property vulnerable.
- Commercial premises unable to trade for a full day while waiting for a next-day slot.
- Insurance claim complications when a known fault was left unattended.

### Common mistakes we see

- Repeatedly resetting an RCD that keeps tripping, it's telling you something is wrong.
- Unplugging one appliance at a time to find the fault while the RCD sticks in place.
- Waiting until morning when there's a burning smell, that's the one situation you don't wait on.
- Calling out someone unqualified to isolate at the consumer unit properly.
- Not turning off the main switch when there's obvious water damage near an accessory.

How we work
## A five-step system, so nothing gets missed.
The same discipline we run on a single-socket call-out and a full commercial fit-out. Predictable, documented, tidy.

- 01

### Inspection
Free on-site survey. We look at the existing installation, the space and the outcome you need, no pressure, no obligation.

- 02

### Diagnosis & fixed quote
We scope the work, agree the spec in plain English and give you a fixed-price written quote with no hidden extras.

- 03

### Booked-in works
We turn up when we say we will, protect the space with dust sheets and keep disruption to your day to a minimum.

- 04

### Testing & verification
Every circuit is tested to BS 7671 (18th Edition). Nothing gets signed off until the readings are right.

- 05

### Certification & handover
You get NAPIT-backed certification, a tidy handover and a clear explanation of what's been done and why.

### What counts as an emergency
Genuine electrical emergencies include: loss of power to a whole property or a critical circuit (freezer, medical equipment, security system, business trading), sparking or arcing at any accessory, burning smells from consumer units or accessories, exposed live parts from damage or water ingress, and any situation where continuing to use the installation isn't safe. If you're unsure, ring, we'll tell you honestly whether it's an emergency or something that can safely wait.

### What we do on arrival
The first thing we do is make the installation safe, usually by isolating the affected circuit at the consumer unit and confirming no exposed live parts. Then we diagnose: insulation resistance testing to narrow the fault, continuity and voltage testing to localise it, physical inspection of the suspect section. Most single-fault jobs are fixed on the first visit; occasionally a fault needs a follow-up scheduled visit for parts, in which case we leave the installation safe overnight.

### Pricing for emergency work
Standard call-outs run Mon–Sun 7am–8pm; out-of-hours covers evenings after 8pm, overnight, and any hour where the fault is genuinely emergency-response. Rates are quoted before we come out and cover call-out plus materials, no surge pricing, no minimum-visit padding.

### Commercial and landlord emergency cover
For commercial premises and landlord portfolios, we can wrap emergency call-out into a maintenance contract with priority scheduling and pre-agreed rates. This is often cheaper over a year than reactive-only, especially if you're already running EICR cycles with us. See our planned maintenance page.

### When to call us vs when to call the DNO
If the loss of power is the whole street, or your neighbours have also lost power, the fault is on the distribution network, not your installation. Ring your local Distribution Network Operator (Western Power in most of our area) on 105. If only your property is affected, or a specific circuit is down, that's on us to diagnose.

Answers
## Common questions on this service.
Still unsure? Ring us on 07888 862958 , surveys and quotes are free.

How much does an emergency call-out cost?+Standard hours run 7am–8pm, Mon–Sun, with out-of-hours cover the rest of the time. Rates are agreed before we come out, call-out plus materials, no surge pricing, no minimum-visit padding.

How quickly can you get to me?+For genuine emergencies in our core areas, Chepstow, Newport, Caldicot, Magor, Undy, Bristol, Cardiff, Bath, we aim to be with you as quickly as we can, day or night. Ring 07888 862958 and we'll give you a straight ETA.

What should I do while I wait?+If you can smell burning or see sparking, isolate at the main switch on the consumer unit if you can do so safely. If water is involved, don't touch anything, turn off at the main switch and wait. If it's a single tripped RCD, don't keep resetting it, leave it off until we arrive.

Are you available at weekends?+Yes, 24/7 out-of-hours cover, including weekends and bank holidays. Out-of-hours rates apply outside 7am–8pm Mon–Sun.

What if it's a fault on the incoming supply, not my installation?+If the whole street is affected, or your neighbours are also without power, ring your DNO (typically Western Power) on 105, the fault is on the grid, not your installation. If only your property is affected, ring us.

Can you fix it on the first visit?+Most single-fault emergency jobs are diagnosed and fixed on the first visit. Occasionally a fault needs a scheduled follow-up for parts or larger remedial work, in that case we leave the installation safely isolated and quote the follow-up before leaving.

Do I get a certificate for emergency remedial work?+Yes, any work that alters a circuit gets a Minor Works Certificate or Electrical Installation Certificate as appropriate. Keep it on file with your installation history.

Can commercial premises get priority cover?+Yes, a planned maintenance contract with us includes priority scheduling for reactive call-outs and pre-agreed rates. See our maintenance page for the structure.

Are you qualified and insured?+Yes. H&H Electrical is NAPIT registered, our EV work is NAPIT-accredited and Ohme approved, and we carry public liability, employers' liability and indemnity insurance in full.

Do you cover my area?+We cover Chepstow, Newport, Bristol & across South Wales, the South West, Cardiff, Bath, Gloucestershire, Caldicot, Magor and Undy. Ring us if you're just outside, most of the time we can still help.

How do I pay?+Bank transfer or cash. We don't take card. Small jobs are call-out plus materials; larger jobs are quoted at a fixed price up front so you know the total before we start.
